I used to think that medical insurance was just medical insurance and whatever the employer offered was fine. That was until my husband’s work was sold to a bigger company. This company was more established and more financially secure then the previous company so many of the employees thought that good things were on their way. The enrollment period for benefits was quickly approaching and everyone was excited. After all, this was a company that was known well on Wall Street and everyone had heard about how nice the medical insurance for their employees were.
Enrollment Time
Once the enrollment period for the medical insurance came, everyone found themselves shell shocked. It turns out that the medical insurance that was being offered to their “high class” employees in New York was not the same medical insurance that was being offered to their “sub-standard employees” of this mortgage company they just bought. At first, there were a few people who did not see the big picture and they were thrilled about the lower monthly premiums that came with the new medical insurance. They forgot to remember that you get what you pay for.
Deductibles and Co-Pays
It turns out that the medical insurance, while the premiums were low, had a four thousand dollar deductible per person in the family each year. The co-pays were incredibly high for this medical insurance. So while there were people bouncing around the office about the hundred dollars a month that they were saving in monthly premiums, the rest realized the debt they would be accumulating through the co-pays and the deductibles.
Employers Don’t Care
Employees quickly learned that just because a “bigger and better” company came along and bought them out, they were not going to be treated better. In fact, when it comes to the medical coverage that they were receiving, they were treated worse. And the big and bad employer did not even give their employees and options between plans. It was one plan and one plan only. Take it or leave it.
Scared To Use The Benefits
Something that this supposedly intelligent company should have thought about was what happens to employees when they have medical insurance that they cannot use. Many people were afraid to go to the doctor or the hospital because of the hundreds or thousands of dollars in bills that would shortly follow. This means that employees would skip out on doctor visits,super slim pomegranate history, which could affect their health. When health is affected work is affected. It should have been calculated the overall cost to the company that comes as a failure to provide their employees with a chance at obtaining decent medical insurance.
Facing The Truth
This just goes to show you that when companies are looking at the bottom line such as the cost of medical insurance, they are missing the bigger part of the picture. Instead of looking at just the here and now, people need to start looking at the potential problems down the road. Whether it is lay offs or bringing in medical insurance, things have to be thought through completely or disaster could strike at any moment.
